Patch All the Things!

If you do only one thing to protect yourself today

Verify that every device in your household is running the latest version of its operating system. Whether you have Apple or Android mobile devices, Windows PCs or Mac desktops or laptops, every single one has received at least one – if not multiple – security updates in the past few weeks.

For the past month I’ve been testing -- every time I pick up a friend or family member’s phone and check for software updates, so far, Every.Single.One needed an update that had not yet been installed.

So, I’m not going to take any more of your time this week. Right now, please, pick up your phone and check for updates. When you get home, check all the other devices in your household.

Be sure to verify your security settings after an update! I have seen recently that Apple keeps turning on Bluetooth on all my devices when an update is installed, even though I have it turned off on every device prior to the update. Honestly!

Once all the operating systems are up-to-date, go check your applications. I wrote pretty extensively about this a few months ago.

Patch All The Things!

Go forth and be secure! and have a great week.
